Women and PilatesPilates dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels, and performs.  It is ideal for women because it builds strength without excess bulk.  You will be able to tone your body while staying sleek and slender.  Pilates teaches body awareness, good posture, and graceful movement helping you to achieve your very best body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen.

Hollywood celebrities and super models use it to maintain beautiful physiques and so can you. Pilates is also an ideal way to workout during and after pregnancy.


Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates, a gymnast and a boxer. He was in incredible shape even into his eighties.  Much of the training done at Pilates Ten is based on the teaching of Joseph Pilates and Ron Fletcher, who studied directly with Joe.

Core strength, flexibility, agility and economy of motion; all fundamentals of Pilates training, are highly relevant to men’s fitness.  Men’s workouts, such as weight lifting, often emphasize a part be part approach.  Pilates works on moving from the core and developing deep muscles of the entire body.  This helps to stabilize and protect the back. Pilates is a great foundation for all types of sports and activities.


Professional dancer have known the benefits of Pilates for decades.  Joseph Pilates moved to New York in 1926.  His studio was close to many dance companies, which lead dancers to the Pilates Method.  Many dancers used Pilates for rehabilitation, but it was more commonly used for the strength, grace, and flow that the method gave the dancer. 

Pilates builds strength without excess bulk making it perfect for the dancer body. A common problem for dancers is that certain parts of the body are over trained, while other parts, including the core, are improperly trained or under developed.  This can lead to poor alignment and poor technique.  Pilates teaches the dancer how to isolate and use certain muscle groups, and how to function properly.  Pilates training is the perfect cross training for a dancer-from student to professional.


Pilates is beneficial for athletes engaged in different sports because it helps stretch the muscles and decreases the risk of injury by strengthening the muscles around the joints.   Strength in the core will also help in effectively executing certain moves, like your golf swing, etc.  Sport specific moves can also be done on the equipment to help you to be efficient in your movement and help correct muscle imbalances.

Back Pain

Pilates based exercises are commonly used at physical therapy offices, chiropractors, and training centers.  People who had back pain and then start practicing Pilates regularly often don’t feel it anymore.

What makes Pilates so effective in the treatment of back pain is that it addresses body imbalances the cause the pain.  Pilates helps to correct posture, strengthen the core, increase flexibility, and increase your body awareness.  When you have a strong center with flexible joints, you are able to align and support your body and spine correctly, resulting in less strain and no pain.

Pregnancy and Pilates

Pilates is an excellent form of exercise for a healthy pregnancy.  It is beneficial both during and after pregnancy.  Pilates is perfect because it is very adaptable and modifications can be made to almost all exercises to adjust with your body and abilities.

Sessions at Pilates Ten are one on one which is ideal for keeping you safe and comfortable while working out throughout your pregnancy.  As your body changes so will your routine.  Pre-natal Pilates is not strenuous, but always pay attention to your body and don’t over do it.  As the baby grows your center of gravity will change, so we will be more cautious when moving about the equipment.

During pregnancy your body produces the hormone “relaxin” to promote flexibility in the joints and muscles for your changing body and delivery.  It is important not to overstretch during pregnancy.  Your Pilates Ten instructor will keep you in a smaller, safe range of motion, concentrating on deep core muscles, breathing, and gentle stretching.  This will be a great time to get those mommy arms ready and keep you strong for when baby arrives!

Then once baby is here and you are cleared by your physician, Pilates will help get you back into pre pregnancy shape.  Focusing on training those abs back in safely and effectively.  Moms! All Pilates Ten sessions are done one on one in our private Pilates studio.  Feel free to bring baby.  She can lay on her blanket and ”watch” Mommy get back into shape. This will help you to get your workouts in without the need of a baby sitter, and free you up to come in when you need to.  Just bring toys, bottle etc. to keep her occupied for 55 minutes.  If she needs some attention, we just take a break, no problem.

All Ages

Young adults to seniors can enjoy the benefits of the Pilates method.  Pilates is designed for all levels of fitness and is easily modified for all clients.

Pilates Programs can usually be started around the age of twelve, depending on the student.  Pilates is a great form of training for the young dancer, ice skater and athlete. Many dance studios are offering Pilates mat and conditioning classes.  Training privately will take the serious student to a higher level of strength and agility.

  • Pilates is safe, non-impact, and non-stress, making it great for the senior population.  It is good for flexibility, balance, and preventing injuries and falls.

  • Pilates helps to improve/prevent some conditions that can occur with age, like:
  • Muscle/joint stiffening
  • Postural changes
  • Osteoperosis/osteoarthritis
